Biographie

Françoise Luciani is a visual artist born in Burgundy.
Her work is characterised by the use of paper and cardboard.
Her attraction to paper comes from her childhood; she would carefully sort everything she found around her by colour.
After studying applied arts, which initially led her to turn to graphic design, she always kept in mind this desire to create with paper. Geometric abstraction and the sobriety of forms came to her as a matter of course and imposed themselves on her as an open door to art and creation, an infinite field of research open since the beginning of the 20th century.

‘Exploring the issue of dividing up space’.

The line is a field of creation that is inexorably part of its time. It always leads to a constructive principle, a symmetrical or optical visual effect. She has chosen to implement it with constructions made of paper cut-outs. Paper is her material of choice for the flatness of its colours, the multitude of its textures and for multiplying the possibilities for creating rhythms. The paper is cut, superimposed, shifted, inserted, arranged and glued. It demands precision and rigour. It is a radical journey towards balance and intuition.

The ‘constructions’ of Françoise Luciani, text by Pierre Souchaud

Françoise Luciani’s art is said to be ‘constructed’ in reference to its very orthogonal ‘geometric’ rigour and to use a term that combines the adjectives abstract, concrete and non-figurative.

Here, in fact, aesthetic pleasure seems to come first and foremost from the extreme precision of a unique know-how because it was invented by the artist and for her. It also arises from the astonishing mastery of a work of cutting and pasting of great delicacy, as an expression of the desire to structure a relationship with the world and to bring order to it in three dimensions.

But there is also this fourth dimension, which is the sensitive and sensual understanding of the material used, its textures, colours, reflections, brilliance, opacity, dizzying transparencies and labyrinthine arrangements.

Thus, intuitive freedom and radicality of gesture as much as of purpose are combined in the best possible way , so that a rhythm, a breath and a kind of kaleidoscopic light emanating from these works dreaming of clarity, harmony and balance for our earthly existence appear.
