Camille Virot approaches Japanese raku with a rare sense of freedom. He deliberately moves away from the traditional conventions of this technique. His aim is to invent a contemporary visual language that is unique and deeply rooted in his own era.
The ‘Heads’ series explores the physical dimension. Here, the clay takes on an almost human presence. These sculptures are silent yet inhabited. They question our own relationship with the living and the mineral.
These works capture disturbing transitional states. They seem to hover between life and petrification. A raw emotional force emanates from them. The absence of embellishment reinforces this sense of real presence.
The connection with the body is evident. The ceramic becomes a veritable skin. One can see the scars of time passed. Cracks and firing scars mark each sculpted face.
