The ‘Heads’ series explores the physical dimension. Here, clay takes on an almost human presence. These sculptures are silent yet seem to be alive. They question our own relationship with the living and the mineral.
These works capture disturbing transitional states. They seem to hover between life and petrification. A raw emotional force emanates from them. The absence of embellishment reinforces this sense of real presence.
The connection with the body is evident. The ceramic becomes a veritable skin. One can see the scars of time passed. The cracks and firing scars mark each sculpted face.
Beyond her famous terracotta works, Camille Virot has developed her artistic language by incorporating industrial elements to question our relationship with raw materials.
