Born in 1979 in Cases-de-Pène, Félix Valdelièvre has developed a sculptural body of work in which the rigour of metal meets a deeply organic sensibility. Self-taught, he was introduced to graphic arts at an early age before finding, in steel, a medium of expression that matched his intuition: dense, demanding, but infinitely malleable for those who know how to listen to it.
Based in the South of France, he shapes the material as one would accompany an inner movement. His sculptures, instantly recognisable, are based on oblong, refined, almost meditative forms. They seem to breathe with a life of their own, suspended between tension and abandonment, stability and imbalance.
In Félix Valdelièvre’s work, sculpture does not impose: it suggests. It does not tell a specific story, but opens up a sensitive space where each viewer can project their own perspective. The volumes soar, curve and sometimes fold in on themselves, evoking the cycle, metamorphosis and the élan vital. Fullness and emptiness dialogue in controlled silence.
Matter as language
The artist works mainly with sheet steel, cut, folded and welded with almost choreographic precision. The welds, often invisible, disappear in favour of a perfect continuity of form. The surfaces are then polished, patinated or varnished, revealing a subtle palette of textures and reflections.
Raw steel, patinated iron or polished stainless steel: each choice of material is considered in relation to the light and the surrounding space. The sculptures capture the brightness of the day, absorb the shadows and change their presence depending on the viewer’s perspective. Some monumental works assert an architectural power; others, more intimate, invite silent contemplation.
A work in balance
Félix Valdelièvre’s work explores paradoxes: heaviness that becomes lightness, rigidity that suggests movement, strength contained in simplicity. His sculptures do not seek to dominate the space but to find their rightful place in it, as if they had always been there.
Through a minimalist and deeply embodied formal style, Félix Valdelièvre offers sensitive, timeless contemporary sculpture, where matter becomes poetry.
