Biographie

Thoma Ryse discovered the world of earthenware design in Quimper in 2012. In September 2014, he created his first collection for the Faïenceries de Longwy. His style is characterised by a wide range of colours and a flexibility of line sometimes reminiscent of Matisse.

The artist draws his inspiration from various sources. He is influenced by Asian sages such as Lao-Tseu, as well as by Western mystics such as Marcus Aurelius and Kierkegaard. His art mixes gushing forms representing emotions and geometric forms symbolising reason.

In 2004, Thoma Ryse began to export his work internationally. He exhibited in Hong Kong in 2005, where he spent three months working in a studio. Today, he lives and works in Brittany, in the Paimpol region.

Thoma Ryse is the creator of the famous ‘Confluence’ statue in Quemper-Guézennec. His highly chromatic works incorporate free forms and are exhibited in various galleries, particularly in Perros-Guirec. He works in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture and aluminium.

Thoma Ryse’s work is characterised by a subtle blend of Eastern and Western influences, reflecting his artistic philosophy and his quest for balance. On the Eastern side, Ryse is strongly influenced by Asian sages, particularly Lao-Tseu. This influence is manifested in his approach to art as a vital breath, a concept that echoes Taoism. As for Western influences, the artist draws inspiration from the great mystics such as Marcus Aurelius and Kierkegaard. These Western philosophical influences complement his visual conception of art and enrich his perspective. Thoma Ryse’s style is characterised by a balance between:

  • Forthcoming forms representing emotions, impulses and passions.
  • Geometric forms symbolising reason and learning.

This duality in his work reflects the constant quest of human beings to find the right balance between reason and emotion. The artist expresses this search for balance through movement in his creations, as evidenced by the recurring presence of the vortex motif in his work.
