It is perhaps in his “flame drawing” technique that Etienne Gros reveals himself to be most poetic. Like an alchemist, he dances with fire, guiding the paper above the flame of a petrol lamp so that the fragile and volatile soot leaves its carbon imprint. Without pencil or brush, he sculpts curves, hips and necks in a black and white of rare intensity, close to charcoal. It is a demanding technique, where mastery of movement is essential, and where each work is a victory over the ephemeral.
