The figure is constructed from contrasting planes — a smooth, deep-blue section contrasts with the rough, ochre texture of the rest of the silhouette, whilst a dark mask, placed over the face, turns the gaze inwards. Towards the bottom of the piece, streaks of amber enamel flow freely, as if frozen in their own motion, reminiscent of the spontaneous glazes found in Japanese ceramics.
Mélanie Duchaussoy has created a piece in which the unpredictability of the kiln and the mastery of the artist’s hand come together: every imperfection, every streak becomes an integral part of the composition. Arlequin is not a patterned costume, but a figure of contrasts — matt and gloss, raw and refined, shadow and colour — which explores identity and the mask with a strong sculptural presence.
